After nearly a year of deadlock, the central government’s general budget finally passed its third reading on August 14. On August 20, the Tourism Administration officially announced the program: weekday lodging subsidies and birthday lodging credits are open for registration, with registration open to everyone from August 25, regardless of ID number, and the five programs rolling out from September 1. For guesthouse owners, this funding is specifically intended to fill those empty rooms from Sunday to Thursday.
NT$3.33 billion
The total 2026 domestic-tourism subsidy budget is NT$3.33 billion. Its stated policy goal is to encourage weekday travel and boost tourism business on weekdays.
NT$3,200
For residents of Taiwan’s main island, stay two consecutive weekday nights and receive a NT$2,000 weekday accommodation subsidy plus a NT$1,200 birthday lodging credit, for a maximum central-government discount of NT$3,200 (up to NT$3,700 for outlying islands).
5 programs
Weekday lodging subsidies, birthday lodging credits, lodging-for-theme-park offers, Taiwan PASS, and corporate group-travel grants; only the birthday lodging credit requires a lottery
Delayed for nearly a year, it’s finally happening
The NT$3.33 billion budget has a clear policy aim: encourage weekday travel and boost tourism business on weekdays. Registration is open for weekday lodging subsidies and birthday lodging credits; from August 25, everyone can apply regardless of the last digit of their ID number, and the five programs will roll out from September 1.
For guesthouse owners, this means: This money is specifically intended to fill those empty rooms from Sunday to Thursday. Here is everything you need to know, all in one place.
1. Five programs at a glance
| Plan | How much can be discounted | Eligible period | Lottery required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| ① Weekday accommodation subsidy | Up to NT$2,000 on the main island / NT$2,500 on outlying islands | September 1–November 30 (Sunday–Thursday) | No |
| ② Birthday accommodation credit | NT$1,200 (can be combined with ①) | 9/10~12/31 | Lottery required |
| ③ Lodging-for-theme-park offer | Redeem up to 2,000 points for theme park tickets | 9/1~11/30 | No |
| ④ Taiwan PASS | 50% off transportation or a NT$1,500 lodging voucher | 9/1~12/31 | Not required (limited availability) |
| ⑤ Corporate group-travel grants | NT$20,000 per group, up to NT$60,000 per company | 9/1~12/15 | Not needed (handled by the travel agency) |
Programs ①, ②, and ③ are most directly relevant to guesthouses. The accommodation voucher in ④ can be combined with ① and ②. Program ⑤ requires a group of at least 25 traveling on Taiwan’s main island and an application through a travel agency.
2. How weekday lodging subsidies are calculated
This is the main offer, with tiered bonuses. The key is whether guests stay a second consecutive night; they don’t have to stay at the same property.
| Region | Stay 1 night | Stay 2 consecutive nights |
|---|---|---|
| Main island | NT$800 | NT$2,000 in total |
| Offshore islands | NT$1,000 | NT$2,500 total |
Outlying islands refers to Kinmen County, Lienchiang County, Penghu County, Liuqiu Township in Pingtung County, and Green Island Township and Lanyu Township in Taitung County.
A few details that are easy to get wrong:
- You can claim it even for a one-night stay; two consecutive nights aren’t required. If you don’t stay the second night, it is considered a voluntary waiver of that night.
- Weekdays = Sunday through Thursday, excluding national holidays and consecutive holiday periods.
- The discount cannot exceed the actual room price. If the room costs NT$700, even if you qualify for an NT$800 discount, you can only get NT$700 off.
- Each national ID number may use the weekday lodging subsidy and birthday lodging credit once each; each can also be applied only once per room per night.
- The applicant cannot be the accommodation’s owner or operator applying for their own property.
3. Birthday lodging credit: the only program allocated by lottery
- Registration period: August 20–September 8, 5:00 p.m. (people with birthdays in any month this year should register once during this period)
- Winners announced: At 11:00 a.m. on September 9, all draws for January through December will take place at once.
- Quota: 1,000 people per birth month, about 12,000 for the full year
- Amount: NT$1,200, and it can be combined with the weekday accommodation subsidy.
- It isn’t limited to your birthday month; you can use it for any weekday stay between 9/10 and 12/31.
- Non-transferable and may not be lent or used on someone else’s behalf. The guest’s ID must be checked at check-in.
If a guest asks, “If I’m not selected, does that mean I get no subsidy?”—the answer is no. The weekday accommodation subsidy doesn’t require a lottery. Guests register, check in, verify their identity, and receive the discount. Explaining this clearly could win you a booking.
So what is the maximum central subsidy? Main island: NT$800 (first night) + NT$1,200 (second consecutive night) + NT$1,200 (birthday credit) = NT$3,200; under the same conditions, the maximum on outlying islands is NT$3,700.
4. Booking channels: Be sure to read this requirement carefully
The subsidy can only be used at partner properties listed on the TaiwanStay website, and booking channels are restricted:
| Channels | Can it be used with the subsidy? |
|---|---|
| Book directly with the accommodation (website or phone) | Yes |
| Domestic booking platforms approved by the Tourism Administration (such as AsiaYo and ezTravel) | Yes |
| International booking platforms (Agoda, Booking.com, etc.) | No |
The Tourism Administration says international platforms may list properties that are not licensed lodging establishments. To protect accommodation safety and consumer rights, they are excluded from the program.
What does this mean? Over the next three months, guests using the subsidy will focus their accommodation searches on the overlap between ‘participating properties × approved channels.’ If your listing isn’t on an approved domestic platform, you won’t be among their options—not because you lost on price, but because you weren’t seen at all. Refer to the campaign page for the complete list of approved platforms, and check now whether your channel mix is covered.
5. How guests apply (the process you’ll be asked about)
- 1
Registration: Upload an image of the front of your ID card or National Health Insurance card to the Domestic Travel Subsidy Application System and create a personal profile. Starting 8/25, registration is open to everyone, regardless of the last digit of their ID number.
- 2
Lottery (birthday lodging credit only): Winners will be announced on 9/9. If you applied only for the weekday lodging subsidy, you’re done once registration is complete.
- 3
Redemption: At check-in, show your ID or National Health Insurance card so the property can verify your identity. The discount is applied once verified.
Older adults who cannot use a phone can have a relative or friend upload the application for them, but each phone number can be used to register no more than five times.
6. Documents you need to keep
Keep your receipts; they are required for subsequent verification:
- Guests book directly with you: Issue them a full invoice after checkout; if you provide a receipt, remember to ask them to sign the ‘Traveler Receipt Sign-off Register.’
- Guests who book through an online travel platform: Guests request a receipt for collected and remitted payments from the platform.
One important restriction: The Tourism Administration explicitly reminds businesses not to raise room rates because of the subsidy. Anyone who discovers price gouging can submit evidence to their local county or city government.
Key Takeaways
The subsidy targets empty rooms on weekdays, and the booking channel determines whether guests can use it. First confirm you are a participating provider, then ensure your listing is on an eligible channel.
- 1
The weekday accommodation subsidy has no lottery: Register, check in, and verify your identity to receive the discount. Only the “Birthday Stay Credit” (NT$1,200; about 12,000 recipients annually; announced 9/9) uses a lottery. Be ready to explain this clearly to guests.
- 2
The subsidy applies to weekdays (Sunday–Thursday, excluding national holidays): On the main island, NT$800 for the first night and NT$2,000 total for two consecutive nights; on outlying islands, NT$1,000 for the first night and NT$2,500 total for two consecutive nights. This policy tool is specifically designed to fill vacant rooms in the off-season.
- 3
The booking channel determines whether guests can use the subsidy: Only bookings made directly with the accommodation or through domestic platforms approved by the Tourism Administration (such as AsiaYo and ezTravel) qualify; international platforms such as Agoda and Booking.com do not. Make sure your channel mix includes an eligible option, or that direct booking through your website is clear—otherwise, you are not among the guest’s choices.
Talk to H& about these questions:
- ‘How can my property confirm or apply to become a participating operator?’ We can help you check eligibility and registration procedures, so you don’t find out it’s too late when the program starts in September.
- ‘Now that the subsidy is available, should I change my weekday rates?’ The Tourism Administration explicitly prohibits raising prices because of the subsidy, but seasonal pricing should be reviewed anyway. We can help you recalculate your weekday rate structure without crossing the line.
- ‘Are my listings on channels that accept the subsidy?’ This is the easiest thing to overlook—and also the easiest to fix. We can review your channel mix and check whether approved domestic platforms are included and whether your room types and prices are listed correctly.
